A Short Guide To Research Paper Format

By: Kenneth Elliott

Research papers are often one of the many problems encountered by students all over. I say problem, because only a few of them actually know how to right research papers; only a few of them know the correct research paper format.

To help themselves, students usually look for sample research papers that are available in their school library or the internet; but sometimes, these samples aren't enough. Here's a short guide to the correct research paper format.

Paper

All research papers are required to use 8.5 by 11 inch paper. Use a good quality bond paper; it is recommended that you use at least a substance 20 paper. Avoid using erasable paper; if you must, make sure that you send a good and clear copy to your professor; no professor likes a research paper that can easily smudge and get dirty.

Spacing, Margins and Indentation

With the exception of page numbers, you should leave one inch margins all around your paper. All paragraphs should be indented by 0.5 inch (equivalent to one tab on the keyboard). If you are quoting other research papers or sources, all quotations must be indented from the left margin by an inch (two keystrokes on the tab key).

The whole research paper must be double spaced. This includes quotations and notes.

Heading and Title

This is not secondary school, which means, there is no room for a title page of your research paper. At the first page of your paper and at the upper left corner of that same page, write the following details:
• Your name
• Your instructor's name
• The subject or course number and title
• The date

Write all these details on separate double spaced lines. Add another space after the date and affix your title at the center of that line. If your title is long then you should add another double space between the lines of your title. Add another double space; this is where you begin your research paper.

You title must neither be underlined nor should it be capitalized. The only acceptable capitalizations are with the first, last, and principal words of the title. Do not end your title with a period; however, if necessary they can end with an exclamation mark or question mark. If the title is written in another language, follow the grammar rules of that language.

Page Numbers, tables and figures
Make sure that you number all your pages; this includes the first pages of your paper. Page numbers should be located at the upper right-hand corner of each page a half inch from the top. Your last name should appear before each number. Nowadays, most word processors have a programmable page numbering option; this makes this task a lot easier.
All tables and other figures should be labeled properly; use an Arabic numeral and caption it as Figure 1 etc.
