Enjoy Travel In New Mexico Learn Regional History While
Participating In All It Has To Offer
By: Willem Karsin
New Mexico, located in the southwestern region of the United States, is a land of wide open spaces and amazing terrain. The borders of Texas, Arizona, Colorado, Utah, and Oklahoma adjoin it with much of their own diverse land and culture.
target="_blank" New Mexico also adjoins the border of Mexico. The original inhabitants of the state, naturally, were Native Americans. Today the Pueblo and Navajo tribes represent the majority of the Indian population.
New Mexico offers the visitor many attractions that can't be found elsewhere. The Native American history of the area is alive with artifacts, dance, art, and music. Be sure not to miss Carlsbad Caverns (a National Park), which is less than 30 miles from the city of Carlsbad. You can take in guided tours of more than 100 caves and enjoy some great hiking.
The capital city of Santa Fe boasts galleries, beautiful southwestern topography, many dining venues, and fine accommodations. Watch the sunrise from your inn or hotel, then stroll to Canyon Road, the city's Art Gallery District that for nearly a century has been the center of Santa Fe's artistic influence.
Just about every type of accommodation is available in Santa Fe, from rustic lodges to luxury hotels and resorts. Hotels in Santa Fe reflect the charm and atmosphere of the city, and contribute to its reputation as a must-see destination. Conde Nast Traveler readers voted Santa Fe near the top the list. With more than a dozen state and private museums to choose from, there's something to fit anyone's interest.
Rafting companies are available to provide a variety of river trips to suit everyone, from family groups to whitewater enthusiasts. The full and half days trips are perfect whether you are staying in Taos, Santa Fe, or Albuquerque.
The New Mexico weather can offer up some amazing storms. Photographic opportunities abound in the three national parks and thirty-plus state parks. For instance, the City of Rocks State park was formed millions of years ago. The volcanic ash created monolithic blocks that are unique in the world. Also unique are the body and trace dinosaur fossils from the Cretaceous, Jurassic, and Triassic periods.
The culture and architecture from eras long past in New Mexico will astound you. There are caves galore, volcanoes, and Native American ruins. Their history and culture have been passed down from generation to generation, as have the stories of the early settlers making their way west and seeking new lives.
