Fem Design

By: FEMstrutture

A structural design that requires an optimization of factors such as strength, stiffness and weight can not disregard the use of FEM software to give a good FEM design.

The analysis of FEM allows precise investigation of the object to be designed that would otherwise not be possible with traditional analytical tools.

Accurate finite element analysis requires:

- First of all a 3D CAD model "intelligent" in that it contains all the critical geometries that can influence the final result but at the same time, be purged by appendices not significant for faster computing time.

- Boundary conditions that are most illustrative of the critical conditions of use.

- A choice of meshing elements consistent with the type of analysis to be conducted

- A proper interpretation of results.

The main advantages resulting by use of a FEM approach to the dimensioning of a product are:

- Rapid selection of the optimal configuration to minimize or even cancel the prototype stage;

- Weight reduction;

- And consequent high cost reduction;

- High accuracy of scantling compared to the safety factor chosen;

- Acceptance of results by the various Classification and Verification Societies that have now recognized universally valid them.

The generic term FEM analysis or calculation include actually different types of analysis such as, for example:

- Linear analysis;

- Non-linear analysis due to geometry (large deflection or contact) or material;

- Analysis of instability (buckling);

- Modal analysis to determine the natural frequency.

Such analysis can be applied to products made from isotropic materials, or, a fortiori, from composite materials where due of the anisotropy the degree of difficulty in the analytical calculation is even larger, while the use of FEM software can almost lead to the same work as for isotropic materials from one point of view of timing of calculation.
